Vet-Owned Business Matters in Southern California

Assisting Veterans with Starting and Operating a Business

After you have served our country in the Armed Forces, you may choose to open a business as you transition back into civilian life. Doing so can be a daunting task, but fortunately the Veterans Administration provides a number of programs through the Center for Veterans Enterprise, to assist you in establishing your company and in securing the business you need to grow.

On October 26, 2004, President Bush signed Executive Order 13360, "Providing Opportunities for Service-Disabled Veteran Businesses to Increase Their Federal Contracting and Subcontracting." The effect of this order was to dictate that a minimum of three percent of all federal agency contracts must be awarded to businesses owned by service-disabled veterans. In the fiscal year 2011, more than $3.5 billion was awarded to businesses owned by veterans through this program. Obtaining certification as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) could make a tremendous difference in the growth and success of your business, and an attorney from California Veterans Rights Center may be able to assist you in doing so.

Do you qualify for veteran-owned certification?

There are strict eligibility requirements for being verified as a Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) or an SDVOSB, including:

  • At least 51% ownership in the business must belong to the veteran, who must have "total unconditional control"
  • The veteran actively manages the business
  • The veteran receives the highest pay rate in the company
  • The veteran's experience in business management is sufficient to capably run the company

You will be required to submit information to the Center for Verification and Evaluation, which will review your application and determine whether you qualify for certification. An attorney from our firm can assist you in preparing your application, as well as appealing a wrongful denial. We understand how important such certification may be for your future, and will work diligently to help you secure approval with a minimum of delay.
