California Veterans Rights Center Supports House Bill 6445

Many of our wounded service members who return home to recuperate can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits but the SSDI program mandates that these service members wait 5 months from the date of injury before any benefits can be provided. Such a long wait for our wounded warriors just adds to their stress.

That wait might be over if Congress can get their act together and pass H.R. 6445, also known as the Recovering Service Members Disability Benefits Act. Introduced by U.S. Representatives Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-PA) and Dave Loebsack (D-IA), the bill, if passed, would exempt disabled service members, who are injured in a combat zone and have qualified for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), from the 5-month benefit waiting period. The bill is supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and the National Guard Association (NGAUS). The California Veterans Rights Center strongly supports this bill.
