Support Grows For Veterans Court In San Luis Obispo County

On January 29, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors heard from numerous speakers supporting the establishment of a veterans treatment court in the County. Numerous counties have already established successful veterans courts. These courts are aimed at getting veterans suffering from PTSD or substance abuse who are convicted of minor offenses related to their service connected disability into treatment programs instead of incarceration. Dana Cummings, San Luis Obispo County Veterans Services officer, presented the plan to the board. While the board took no action on the issue, all five members and more than a dozen citizen speakers expressed support for the program. Mr. Cummings, a former Marine, will hopefully seek official board action in the near future. We salute Mr. Cummings and all those working hard to bring a much needed veterans treatment court to San Luis Obispo.
